SUMMER IS THE CAT’S MEOW
City Shelters Overwhelmed with Kittens and Cats,
Offering 2-For-1 Adoptions
NEW YORK CITY (May 30, 2007)—With warmer weather comes the annual influx of cats and kittens at the city’s animal shelters, and Animal Care & Control of New York City (AC&C) is offering special adoption rates to send these felines home with new families.
Beginning June 2, 2007, adopters can bring home two cats or kittens for the price of one—$25.00 per cat/kitten or 2 for 1. The adoption fee includes microchip, spay or neuter, one month of free pet health insurance and one free veterinary visit at one of the many participating animal hospitals in the five boroughs.
In June, July and August, AC&C rescues approximately 120 cats a day, or 3,000 per month. This growth spurt is not only because stray cats are more active during warmer months—and more likely to be rescued by an animal control officer or concerned citizen—but also because more litters are born during the summer.
“Cats breed at a time of year that makes the population swell in the spring and summer months,” AC&C’s Director of Administrative Services, Richard Gentles explained. “The next couple of months are a perfect time of year to adopt, because the adoption fees are low and selection of cats is incredible,” Gentles adds.
All three of the city’s shelters are open from 12:00 PM to 7:00 PM, seven days a week. For more information on the animals currently available for adoption, visit www.nycacc.org or call 311.
