Microchipping

All pets should have proper, permanent identification at all times. Microchipping is a preferred method of identification. Microchipping dogs and cats helps to ensure their safe return should they become lost. Veterinary professionals quickly and safely inject a tiny microchip, containing an identifying code, under the skin at the scruff of the neck. The owner sends the pet's information to the AKC Registry on the form provided at the time of microchipping. This information is readily accessible to shelters and veterinarians nationwide using a handheld scanner.

Microchipping entails a low, one-time lifetime enrollment fee that ensures the animal can be permanently retrieved through this database. Animals also receive a collar tag on which each animal's unique ID code appears, along with the toll-free 800-telephone number to allow someone without a hand scanner to access owner information and return the lost animal.
